The art exhibition at Brundlund Castle impressed us greatly. The exhibition is varied, interestingly designed, and, within the unique atmosphere of the historic castle, a truly special experience. Afterwards, we visited the small café in the castle. The coffee and cake were delicious. We would particularly like to commend the exceptionally friendly staff member, whose warm manner made our visit even more enjoyable. Overall, a wonderful place that we can wholeheartedly recommend to anyone interested in art and culture.

Since the exhibition closes at 5:00 PM and we only arrived at 4:30 PM, we only had time for coffee and cake. The staff were very friendly and helpful.

The park is absolutely stunning. So very well maintained... The museum in the little castle is surprisingly interesting.
And finally, take a long break in front of the building...

A lovely little collection of Danish Surrealism. The best part is the combination ticket with coffee and cake.

Aabenraa Castle Brundlund Slot (1420)
When Margrethe I took over Aabenraa from the Counts of Holstein in 1411, she secured the right to build a new castle in place of the old one. It is likely that King Erik of Pomerania built the large Brundlund castle to the west of the city in 1420, surrounding it with moats. Nothing is known about King Erik of Pomerania's castle. The present castle was built in 1530 by Frederik I as a combined gate and main building, replacing the medieval Aabenraahus located in the western part of the city near the Vestergade/Nygade junction. At the same time, a mill, a lock leading into the moat, and Slotsvandmøllen, which was part of the castle's defenses, were also built.
In 1590, during the Gottorp family era, the castle was rebuilt in the Renaissance style by Hercules von Oberberg, adding an octagonal tower positioned diagonally at each corner, a smaller stair tower, and an open gallery on the south side. Between 1805 and 1807, it was transformed into a neoclassical structure by C.F. Hansen. A tree-lined dam, dating from 1744, flows over the castle moat, and part of the old moat has been converted into a lake area.
Until 1996, Brundlund Castle served as the administrative center of Aabenraa County and the residence of the county and district governors. Since 1998, the castle has housed the Brundlund Castle Art Museum, which became part of the Sønderjylland Museum in 2006.
