The best fish and chips we've had in Denmark so far. Plus, a view of the harbor while eating. Yes, it's self-service, but the value is excellent!

Good food in a convenient location!

During our short vacation in Hvide Sande, my wife and I stopped for lunch on a sunny July day in 2025 at Café Gaflen, idyllically situated on the small lock island of Hvide Sande, right where the North Sea and the fjord meet. The first glimpse of the modern, almost entirely glass-fronted building against the harbor backdrop was a positive one. In the light-filled pavilion, practically every table offered a panoramic view of the harbor basin, lock gates, and passing fishing boats. The spacious terrace was particularly tempting on this warm day, where you can almost immediately feel the fresh sea breeze. You order directly at the counter. We chose ten fish nuggets with fries, a pølse mix, also with fries, and two Cokes. The fish pieces were crispy on the outside and juicy on the inside; it was clear that they were real fillets. The fries were spicy, the sauce sweet and spicy, and the fries came out of the kitchen golden yellow and perfectly salted. The portions and quality were equally impressive. The fact that the owners use regional fish and, wherever possible, local ingredients was evident in every bite. The location, with its unobstructed view of the locks, and the value for money are particularly noteworthy: by Danish standards, our full meal was well below the price of the surrounding harbor restaurants. Families also feel at home here, as there is space for strollers and highchairs are available. And if you're still craving something sweet after your snack, there's a selection of ice cream. Café Gaflen combines maritime harbor flair, honest fast-food classics made from high-quality ingredients, and unobtrusively friendly service. Our stopover was a complete success – which is why I give it a full 5 out of 5 stars.

The soft serve ice cream is delicious. Expensive, but the service is super friendly and the atmosphere is beautiful.

Very good value for money, plus great service.

A quick lunch, knew nothing about Hvide Sande, but the restaurant caught our eye. Lovely easy parking right by the restaurant. Great service from the first moment we walked in the door, smiling and welcoming. The food was as it should be, the kids loved the chicken and fish nuggets. You felt “at home” - can be recommended.

All in all a good place to eat. The pictures of the different meals match what you get served. But the view is 5 stars.

A lovely restaurant with plenty of space inside and outside, some of which are covered. The staff is very friendly and speaks German. The food, ice cream, and coffee are also good and not too expensive.
