Food was below our expectations. Service was average and the replacements at the buffet were running slow and some samples never replaced during ours 1.5h stay. 55 dkk for a bottle of water, was sort of disappointing...

Delicious food and very friendly and attentive service. The room at the serving table is not that big, so it inevitably results in a fairly high noise level.

Loved The smörrebröd 😍 the waitress was so nice to help me choose. Had a great beer with that, awesome experience!

TLDR: smorrebrod rye bread was really dry, most dishes I did not enjoy, pork in bechamel was good. Lots of people speaking danish in there though, so could just be my palate. I really tried to like this place but I think it’s either just not for my American palate or I went on a bad day. The smoked herring and marinated herring were decent but the one with currants (ribs(?)) was so fishy I couldn’t take more than one bite. Most of the other dishes either were lacking in flavor to me, or were very mayo heavy. Herbs were fresh though. Worst part was the rye bread was so consistently dry each time. We arrived early so it’s not like the food was sitting out for a while to make it that dry. The crispy pork in bechamel was the only bright spot, the pork was very well cooked and had a nice balance of fat and salt. Very lively old school atmosphere, seemed like there were a couple of food tours, various tourists but also locals enjoying lunch. The staff tried to suggest and explain certain dishes to us as well which was very nice of them. I’m still glad I got to try so many different dishes, but in hindsight 700 krona (about 100 dollars) for 2 people could’ve been better spent elsewhere.

Really cozy restaurant with a brilliant concept

One of the best smørrebrød restaurants in Copenhagen - a wonderful buffet with sandwiches, so you can taste a lot of different things, homemade of course! And then they have BISCUITS CAKE = the taste of childhood 😋

The concept is absolutely amazing and I wish that more restaurants copy it. I had quite high expectations having read about the generel history of the place as well as read many of the reviews from other people, however I must say I was quite disappointed. If I have to sum-up the experience with one word, I’ll go ahead and say dry. Everything was just dry. The flæsk and the bread especially. The thing is, that the concept with all the different smørrebrød is amazing, and their selection equally so, however when every single piece of rugbrød you’re eating is super dry, then it’s just not a nice experience. And that’s regardless of whether there is hønsesalat on top of it or sild. It might be because they are using a lower quality bread, or because the plates are sitting for a while. I don’t know, but it ruined the experience for me a bit. In other Smørrebrød places the bread is taken super serious and I don’t feel like it is at Ølhalle. Nonetheless, amazing atmosphere, service and hospitality. But definitely far from top tier smørrebrød. Would I come back? Maybe. I would come back with foreigners that think the gimmick is fun, but not a place I would come to eat good smørrebrød.
