Koch's Kaffebar Aalborg

I originally only wanted to have something to drink, but when I saw those wonderful Danish sandwiches, I couldn't resist. Everything was delicious, the service was pleasant, the atmosphere was cozy and homely.

Very nicely located next to the shopping arcade. The staff was very friendly, and our dog even got water. The iced coffee was okay, but unfortunately there wasn't enough syrup, so it was quite bitter. Still drinkable and refreshing, though. They could have easily asked about that 😅

There are cities you travel to – and then there are cities you return to. For me, Aalborg has become the last. Over the years, my work has taken me here again and again, and as so often happens, you slowly start to feel at home. Not because you know every street, but because you recognize the atmosphere. And Aalborg has a very special one of its kind. It is a city where you enjoy life. Where you eat well. And where – perhaps precisely because of the great competition – you make an effort. Because there are many cafés and restaurants here, and if you want to get by, you have to be able to do something special. You have to have charm, you have to have coziness, and you have to have control over your product. This is exactly where Kochs Kaffebar comes into the picture. In the middle of the city, on the corner of Algade and Roldgade, lies this family-run coffee shop, which has been quietly expanding since February 2013 – first on the ground floor, later with the first floor in 2014, and then with a comprehensive renovation in 2018, which has given the place a lovely roof terrace, among other things. But it is not the history itself that you notice when you step inside. It is the result of it. From the outside, the place seems almost modest. But inside, small spaces of experiences open up – as if each corner has been allowed to live its own life. There is something homely about it, without it becoming private. Something well thought out, without it feeling forced. I stopped by for brunch. And as so often before, when something works, it is not because there is too much of it – but because things have been thought out. The breakfast plate was a small study in balance. Not a crowded parade of coincidences, but a calm composition: a good bun with cheese, and then a choice – either a creamy Greek yogurt or a crispy croissant. Simple. And precisely because of that, it works well. We enjoyed it all. The service, which was present without being intrusive. The experience, which was allowed to unfold at its own pace. And not least the interior, which surprised the further you moved into the premises – and upwards. These are the kind of places that don't shout loudly, but still linger in the memory. And perhaps that is actually very telling – not just for Kochs Kaffebar, but for Aalborg as a whole.
