I have to say that this was one of nicest dining experiences for some time. We had 3 sandwiches between us (Prawn, Chicken and Salt beef) All three were first class! The staff were welcomeing and fantastic fun, chatting and joining in the jokes. I can see why Schønnemann has been around for so long and has first class reputation. It's a must go where you are in Copenhagen!

Restaurant Schønnemann is truly a treasure in Copenhagen—a family-owned place steeped in tradition and warmth. Visiting one of the city’s oldest restaurants was a highlight of our trip, and it was worth every bit of the anticipation. A heads-up: booking in advance is a must. We reserved a month and a half ahead, and given its limited hours and cosy setting, walk-ins aren’t usually an option. Take a moment to check their website for details, especially if you’re bringing a little one or need specific accommodations. They run a single lunch service from 11:30 am to 2 pm, inviting diners to slow down, relax, and embrace the Danish spirit of “hygge.”
As first-time visitors and foreigners, we felt genuinely welcomed here. Our waiter was attentive and friendly, guiding us through the classic Danish smørrebrød (open-faced sandwiches) and beer options with care and warmth. If you’re new to smørrebrød, it’s a beautifully unique taste of Denmark—but if it’s not quite your thing, it’s worth noting this is their speciality. We loved how every dish reflected the essence of Danish cuisine, with highlights like the traditional pickled herring.
What’s also lovely is their flexibility for vegan and vegetarian diners, making the experience accessible to everyone. Overall, Restaurant Schønnemann is a place to fully enjoy the present moment, from the flavours to the relaxed pace. It’s a perfect, genuine Danish lunch experience that you won’t soon forget.

This restaurant serves only hearty smorrbords and closes by 4p. We had a late lunch/early dinner here at 3p. My wife got the Elderberry herring (which she absolutely loved) and roasted smoked duck with mushroom gravy) which she was disappointed in.I had the classic Classic roast beef (which was truly spectacular) and tenderloin pork steak with mushrooms a la créme, bacon and parsley frits. A very hearty plate. We shared a fifth plate of the Sørens special– pan-fried smoked eel glazed in stout and served w/scrambled eggs & chives on toasted rye bread. This was absolutely out of this world. The whole experience was expensive ($137 for the 5 plates without drinks) but worth it. Hands down, our best meal of the trip.

Absolutely special place. Sandwiches are creative and bloody delicious. Servers are funny and professional. All wrapped up in a cosy ambience. Highly recommended (if you can get a table!)

Great traditional danish food with a ton of options - everything we had was delicious and felt like it had a lot of thought put into it. Service was friendly and funny! Definitely book well ahead of time.

We ate here today and cannot recommend highly enough. My husband is coeliac. They have GF bread and plenty GF options for toppings. We thoroughly enjoyed all of our sandwiches but my fried plaice with crab mayo was especially sensational. Customer service was also excellent. The staff are super friendly, professional and helpful.

The food here was fantastic. It was the highlight of our visit to Copenhagen. We had the most perfect service from Anne Mortenson. Every plate was delicious and Anne matched each one with drinks. We are still talking about our meal.
