Will first start off by saying the food was delicious. Service however was cold and the overall ambiance was sad. If you do go ask to not be sat in the basement as it’s soulless.

During my trip to Denmark, I visited Selma to try smørrebrød, something I had been wanting to try in person. *Smørrebrød is an open-faced sandwich made with buttered rye bread and topped with a variety of ingredients. I was determined to enjoy the full experience, so I ordered the course meal. Every dish was carefully and delicately prepared, and the flavor deepened with each bite. I particularly liked the smørrebrød with potatoes on top. This restaurant recommends pairing it with snaps, a distilled spirit, so I enjoyed it with wine. They also serve a variety of desserts, so if you order a course meal, it's best to go hungry.

We visited Selma in Copenhagen several times, most recently in 2025. The food was excellent – truly outstanding smørrebrød, and the chef deserves 10/10. Unfortunately, our experience with the service was mixed. From some of the waitresses there was a sense of passive-aggressive attitude, which left an unpleasant impression. On the positive side, there was also a wonderful young waiter with great humor and ease in communication, who provided excellent service. Overall, the food is superb and absolutely worth the visit, but the interaction with certain staff members made us hesitant to return. We would love to come back in the future, hopefully with a different service experience.

I finally understand Danish new cuisine; people say it's the best cuisine nowadays... well, no. You cannot compare to French or Italian but when the culinary giants have lost their way in terms of quality and service overall, the Danes show sheer will in delivering quality and sophistication. They are still far from it but getting there. Take Selma : nice and professional service in a, let's be honest, too easy going set up, where you are served very expensive sandwiches. Yes the products are fresh, nicely prepared and served, but they remain sandwiches. I love a good sandwich but 2 of them + 2 beers + 2 schnaps + 1 dessert for 150€ is stupid. I know they import a lot, but nothing in the plates were imported; if I was served chicken from Bresse in France or Blue Lobster, I'll be ok .... but it had salmon and beetroot. Again, it was good and well balanced and I'll be ok (ish) at a 100 € bill, not 150 €.

The service was warm and attentive, with a young team who genuinely tried to connect with diners, not just with me, but also with those seated nearby. Most of the clientele are tourists drawn in by the promise of a distinctly Danish food experience. On that front, it fell short. The ingredients themselves were of good quality, yet the cooking lacked imagination and did little to convey a real sense of Danish or broader Nordic cuisine. What arrived was essentially a succession of rye in various forms like bread, crisps, toast, occasionally topped or accompanied with rather uninspired garnishes and cooking techniques who can be expected on gastronomic level. The result was an unremarkable, tapas-style Danish dinner: pleasant enough, fairly priced, but ultimately forgettable. Amazing smörrebröd, with really nice service! The matjes is a must try!

Selma was our first meal in Copenhagen on our foodie tour visit. We chose this place for our first dinner for their take on the Danish Smorrebrod plates that were elevated to fine dining rather than carroyout. The restaurant serves a variety of craft brewery, but we went a la carts for various Smorrebrod instead of an optional tasting menu selection.

One of the best dinner of my life. Incredibile food quality, definitely worth the visit for a nice local dinner.

Absolutely delightful cuisine! Smørrebrød are top notch! You have to make a reservation as they are usually booked up.
