Celebrated my birthday there last week. It wasn’t my first experience with “fancy-pansy justbecauseitstinyitshouldtastegood” food, but their 10 course menu absolutely blew my mind. The flavour combinations, the thinking outside the box attitude, the spot on wine/mocktail pairing, their professionalism and absolute love and dedication for what they are doing worth every penny.
There were 9 tables in the restaurant (one that was not in use). There was a nice view and it was cozy and nicely decorated. The wait staff were friendly and polite and helpful. The kitchen was open, so we could see the chef cooking.
When we were about to leave, we were given a printed menu so we could see what we had. We really would have liked to have had it upon arrival so we could follow along more easily.
The chef pays a lot of attention to detail, and everything is meticulously put together, resulting in some very nice plates. Soups can be a bit difficult to make fancy, and it might have been a good idea to drizzle a little green herb oil (or similar) on top to get a splash of color, instead of just a bowl of white foam.
Many of the dishes were very exciting, and we enjoyed tasting food that we don't usually make ourselves at home. There were some dishes where I wished there had been more power in the flavors, so that you could REALLY taste what the main ingredient was, because it was a bit difficult to separate things sometimes. I'm not a big fan of caviar, but the ones they used didn't taste like "supermarket caviar", but were mild and soft in taste. The octopus was like a slightly rubbery paste, and it took a while for me to taste it, but it was fine and maybe I'll be less hesitant the next time someone serves me octopus.
The dessert was just as beautiful as everything else. It was shaped like a flower, with very fine chocolate petals carefully placed around the plate. If they had made the dessert so that it was served like a closed flower, after which a hot sauce made it open at the table, then we would be over in the "Wow!" category.
After dessert, there were filled chocolates that the chef served for us, and he wanted to hear what we thought of the food. The chocolate work was very impressive. They were very thin chocolate shells, and there was room for a lot of filling. I have no doubt that they used the best ingredients to make it all, but again I missed the flavor in the filling itself. It tasted mostly "fatty" and "heavy". With such thin shells they can easily have two layers of filling, one fat ganache and one (for example) intense berry jelly. I couldn't taste marzipan in the one with marzipan.
I have celiac disease, and they were so professional in handling my allergy. They presented the food in a relaxed way, as if there was no problem at all or anything they had to deal with - the small pie shell was made with buckwheat - maybe everyone else was too, and we never felt like we were getting less than everyone else. Our menu was on the same level as everyone else's, from what I can tell. I trust the staff, and I believe they know what they are doing. This cannot be said of all restaurants, but I would like to say this about the Treetop restaurant.
Regarding drinks, we settled for a single glass of wine for my partner and a glass of juice for me (in addition, water with/without bubbles which was served continuously). The juice was probably based on something with apples and then something was dripped in when serving, which was supposed to bind the flavors together, but I mostly tasted a plain apple juice and nothing else. For 130 kr, I cannot recommend buying another glass of juice. Maybe the other options were more exciting, but I didn't bother trying more after my first attempt was so boring.
Overall, we had a fantastic evening. We didn't feel like a long time passed between each serving, and yet we were there for about 4½ hours. There was a pleasant atmosphere in the room. It was a great experience.
