🇩🇰🍽️ Bjørnekælderen
Bjørnekælderen is a hidden gem in Copenhagen, known for its rich history as well as delicious food and drink. Nestled beneath the cobblestone streets of the city's Old Town, this historic pub has been serving locals and visitors for over a century. The name "Bjørnekælderen" translates to "Bear Cellar" due to its reputation as one of the city's most famous drinking establishments in the early 19th century. Originally a storage room for a nearby brewery, it was later converted into a pub and an old legend has it that the name "Bjørnekælderen" came from a bear that once lived in the cellar.

A few years ago we had a creative and tasty Christmas menu with a twist: everything was good. Yesterday we were not impressed. The starter - squid and carrots was saved by the mussel fund. The squid was cut into strips and thus lost the bite that is normally found in calamari. The tartare was a nice, fresh, well-functioning small entree. The venison had been in the sous vide for too long, so it was completely without structure, and was served with no other accompaniments than a sliced mushroom and a bit of marrow. The pear, which was supposed to carry the dessert, was almost unripe and lacked flavor.
It wasn't a bad meal, but it could easily be much better - we know that from the past.
Kudos to the young servant who was knowledgeable and present.

Good lunch experience. Excellent smørrebrød, especially the fish fillet and the tartare were good, but unconventional flavors. Super service - and the kitchen managed to create 3 pieces of vegetarian sandwich that were not on the menu.

Delicious food (herring and sausage rolls), but dry and boring plaice fillet. Polite, but also a little cold service. Nice rooms, but very humid, and the acoustics could be better, just as the chair was quite uncomfortable to sit in. However, the food and the polite service made up for it.

The last time I ate at Bjørnekælderen it was lunch with smørrebrød. It was absolutely fantastic but it was also many years ago. This time we visited the place to try their evening menu. It was clear that they tried to be creative like most restaurants in Copenhagen. Unfortunately, I don't think they hit the spot and the dishes were either too neutral or had flavor combinations that didn't make sense. I missed what they were really good at: classic Danish food cooked to perfection. The service was fine, so maybe I should come another day and get lunch instead
