stumbled across this place because i was too tired to drag my luggage from Central station to my intended destination for lunch, so i deviated here without even looking at the reviews. the staffs were super friendly and welcoming and i thought why not? ordered the Pork Tenderloin and goodness it was really delicious. the onions, the jam compote blended so well together and the pork was so tender - effortless cutting. it was super cosy to just sit outside and enjoy the breeze while sipping a glass of local lager. highly recommend and i will come back again when i am in town.

Another fantastic lunch at Café Gammeltorv. You are always greeted by the sweet owners with smiles, warmth and a feeling of being welcome – and there is always a table ready. The kitchen is constantly creating little masterpieces on the plates, where both presentation and taste merge into a higher unity. The food is not only beautiful to look at, it also tastes absolutely fantastic. It is clear that love and care are put into every single dish. We will definitely be back – in a month at the latest.

Café Gammeltorv – where Kim Larsen, Piet Hein and the open-faced sandwich meet Café Gammeltorv is one of those places that you easily pass by – but definitely shouldn’t. One day my wife and I stood on Strøget and asked the classic question: “What are we doing now?” Fortunately, the answer was Danish lunch. And when you know that Kim Larsen and Gasolin once held their general meetings here, it’s hard not to feel a little bit like part of history. History in the walls Café Gammeltorv is also called “The House with the Green Tree” and is discreetly located at Gammeltorv. The place has been a lunch restaurant since the early 1900s, and over the years, artists, writers and politicians have left their mark on the place. Piet Hein wrote several of his famous poems here, and the café is filled with small historical details that make it more than just a restaurant. The interior consists of several cozy living rooms with old Copenhagen pictures on the walls and lots of atmosphere. The food I almost always start with fried herring. I may have had more spectacular versions elsewhere, but this one grew on me with every bite. Together with rye bread and a schnapps, it worked exactly as a classic Danish lunch should. A little tip for Norwegians: Spread the fat on the rye bread. It may sound harsh, but it actually elevates the whole experience. My wife chose eggs and shrimp and declared it the best shrimp dish she had ever had. I continued with roast beef, which was sliced so thin that it almost resembled carpaccio. Beautifully presented and really tasty. Beer The beer selection is better than many classic lunch restaurants. We have several times found good beers from, among others, Nørrebro Bryghus and Fur Bryghus, which go perfectly with the smørrebrød. Atmosphere Perhaps the best thing about Café Gammeltorv is that the place grows on you. It's not flashy. It's not modern gastronomy. It's just a real Copenhagen lunch spot with history, personality and lots of soul. Conclusion If you want to experience classic Danish lunch in historic surroundings, Café Gammeltorv is an excellent choice. I can see why Piet Hein sat here. And I can see why Kim Larsen came back. One of those places that keeps drawing you back to Gammeltorv.

A classic Danish lunch institution since 1902 in a wood-panelled interior decorated with historical Copenhagen prints, serving traditional smørrebrød with +50 house snaps, attentive traditional service in an atmosphere that remains untroubled by trends. We were 2 for lunch that had a stjerneskud with fried plaice, hand-peeled prawns and remoulade, a beautifully presented smoked eel with scrambled egg and chives, and a golden fried Camembert with sweet jams, accompanied by beers on draught and snaps for €50/pax, which is a very fair value for the quality and ambiance.

Good and fresh service by adults. Others could learn from that. Got fish fillet and tartar. Really good fish fillet and the best classic tartar I've ever had. A huge recommendation from here.
