02/12/2025: The name promises a lot – Applaus. And admittedly: there were several moments when I almost stood up and applauded. But like a piano where one key is slightly out of tune, a full ovation requires that all elements play cleanly. And they don’t (yet) quite do that at Applaus in Aalborg. First of all: the facade still looks more like a tavern that serves the dish of the day and Tuborg Classic. It doesn’t promise what awaits inside – and that’s a shame, because inside the kitchen someone is actually working with precision and ambition. If Applaus wants to be a place that plays on the fine gastronomic keys, then the outside should also match the music. We went all-in and had “FULDE APPLAUS” for 1,250 kr. – a full tour through the kitchen’s repertoire. It was varied, experimental and technically well-executed, but the food unfortunately didn’t quite reach the level where you sit in silent ecstasy. The final precision, the final “wow”, was missing. It was really good – but it wasn’t a masterpiece of dimensions. More of a shooting star than a Michelin star. On the other hand, one of the waiters deserves a standing ovation and a driver’s license for the wine list. He delivered a solid, professional and charming effort. Unfortunately, he was backed up by two colleagues who seemed a bit like they had been cast on the same day. They stumbled over the menu, forgot a bit, fumbled with the dishes – and that pulled the experience in a more amateurish direction than the place really deserves. There is an indecision in the experience. The place wants something big, but the decor and service don’t quite match the ambitions. There is nothing wrong with relaxed gastronomy – quite the opposite – but then it should be a style, not a compromise. Applause is close to something big, but you leave with the feeling that the place is just about to find its last bit of self-confidence and coherence. It costs a lot of money – and then you expect the whole team to be ready for opening night. Right now it's like hearing an otherwise great orchestra where the trumpeter hasn't read the notes. A nice evening, good food, but for 1,250 kr. for "FULDE APPLAUS" you expect a little more than half a round of applause and a really good waiter.

23/09/2025: Review of Restaurant California in Frederikshavn Restaurant California at Lodsgade 4 in Frederikshavn offers an authentic and satisfying burger experience that I highly recommend. I visited while in Skagen for the day and was drawn to the cozy ambiance and welcoming atmosphere. I ordered the Texas Burger, which came with a warm bun, a 200g beef patty, salsa, jalapenos, cheddar cheese, lettuce, onions, pickles, and homemade dressing, all served with crispy fries. The flavors were bold, with the jalapenos adding just the right amount of spice, and the homemade dressing tying everything together perfectly. My wife chose the Hollywood Burger, featuring the same delicious 200g beef patty, topped with sautéed mushrooms, onion rings, cheddar cheese, lettuce, onions, pickles, and the house-made dressing, also accompanied by fries. She loved the richness of the mushrooms and onion rings, which gave the burger a unique, hearty flavor. For our daughter, the Children’s Burger was a hit. A simple, well-sized burger served with fries, it was the perfect portion for her. Restaurant California not only delivered on flavor but also on service. The staff was attentive and friendly, adding to the overall enjoyable experience. 02/09/2025: Had a gift certificate from the previous owner, issued 3 weeks before the new owners took over the place, they are not obligated to redeem such a gift certificate, but did so anyway. The pizzas were super good with crispy bottom 🙂

09/09/2025: A fantastic cozy hotel. We were welcomed by the sweetest staff. The rooms were great. The breakfast buffet was so delicious with everything homemade!

07/09/2025: We had invited two guests to Kallehavegaard Badehotel's restaurant. We arrived at the restaurant and went up to the bar to be shown our table. The interior itself was nice and in a "bathhouse style" There were other guests at tables, and the waiter was a young girl who clearly had not been prepared for the task - she was confused. We were given a menu that was actually dirty and needed to be changed. We had considered 3 dishes according to the chef's choice, but it became clear that we did not want chicken for the main course. The waiter was confused and did not know what the different dishes on the menu contained. She left our table several times, clearly irritated. At the table behind us, 4 guests leave the restaurant shaking their heads without having been allowed to order food? We decide to have a side dish for a starter and a whole fried plaice for the main course. We also ask about IPA beer, but she does not know if they have it? Which she investigates, she comes back and says that bottled beer was not delivered. We end up with large draft beers. We wait for our draft beer which is just not served? Then the food comes and the waiter starts talking about the sauce there and pours it over the fish, we interrupt her and say have we still not had our draft beer? (We wanted to toast our guests BEFORE the food came). She leaves the table, My husband goes to the bar himself and says that now we want our drinks, he brings the 3 beers himself and finally the young waiter comes with the last ones. She is clearly irritated. The starter is good and fresh. We discover that one of our guests has had a Classic draft beer in a 0.5 glass and another a 0.6 glass? The main course is served and the fish is well prepared with nice accessories. The toilet is missing toilet paper and the towel is very wet. When we have finished the main course, the chef comes with cookies as a combination that we did not get our drinks. He says we can also have coffee or dessert but we decline the offer. He says he was the one who sent the starter to us before we had drinks……but we had waited so long that it was embarrassing for our guests??? I go up to pay, and the young waiter is still very irritated and seems angry. She doesn't ask if we had a good evening or anything. She just throws the payment machine on the counter. Does the display say if you want to tip? I didn't… It was a shameful experience, but the food was good.

26/08/2025: Very quiet and discreetly located behind the dunes. Danish cleaning staff, but satisfactory. Perhaps not the best value for money, but that's true throughout the country.

31/10/2025: The pizzas and burgers were so delicious that we ordered a second time during our vacation. The family who owns the place is very friendly and even speaks relatively good German; the menu is also available in German. The dough is perfect, the pizzas are a good size, and the burgers and fries are also good. Thank you so much, and we'll definitely be back!
